Matcha is well known as a super-food. But what is matcha? And why should you choose Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder of specially grown green tea. When drinking matcha you consume the entire leaf of the plant unlike the traditional green tea where there tea leaves are steeped and discarded. This means you absorb the maximum amount of nutrients. matcha delivers a mega dose of antioxidants which also contains an abundance of amino acids, essential vitamins and minerals. Each serve of matcha is equivalent to 10 cups of traditional green tea (nutritionally).
But that's not all...
1. Matcha Green Tea helps boosts metabolism and increases fat burning
Matcha contains a high level of EGCG which is an antioxidant that helps boost metabolism of up to 43%, compared to a regular cup of green tea which only boosts metabolism of up to 8%. Matcha helps burn fat as matcha contains catechins which increases fat burning of up to 17%. This results in matcha reducing the accumulation of body fat.
2. Matcha Green Tea contains an abundance of antioxidants
Antioxidants are the nutrients and enzymes that is responsible for supressing the negative effects of UV radiation, prevents anti-ageing and life-threatening diseases. As previously stated matcha is abundant of antioxidants and one serving is equivalent to 10x the normal green tea but Matcha has over 5 times the antioxidants compared to any other food (using the ORAC method). Fun fact: Matcha has 60.5 times the antioxidants compared to Spinach.
3. Matcha Green Tea provides an energy boost without negative side effects
Matcha contains caffeine but a healthier form of caffeine compared to the one found in coffee. In fact the caffeine found in matcha is much less where every gram of matcha contains about 30mg while coffee contains about 80-100mg. However less caffeine does not make matcha better than coffee but the the properties of the caffeine found in matcha do. The caffeine found in matcha is absorbed much slower in to the body (3-4 hours) and gives a slower release of energy compared to coffee where the caffeine tends to be absorbed very quickly into the body which results in energy spikes (caffeine crash). This means that matcha doesn't have the usual side-effect caused by stimulants such as hypertension and nervousness. Matcha is the perfect alternative to coffee as it doesn't raise blood pressure or heart rate.
4. Matcha Green Tea serves to enhance mood, improve memory, promote better concentration and produces inner calmness
Buddhist monks have been using matcha for over 800 years to specifically help with their meditation. Even in modern age matcha is still commonly used in traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Matcha is rich in L-theanine which is a unique amino acid that contains anti-anxiolytic properties which aids in boosting alpha waves in the brain. As L-theanine boosts the activity in the alpha frequency band in the brain, it results in a state if relaxed alertness and mental clarity. L-theanine may help in improving memory and mood as a side effect of L-theanine is the production of dopamine and serotonin. In addition, L-theanine is common in all teas but matcha contains up to 5 times more than common black and green teas.
5. The catechins that found in matcha have contains antibiotic properties which promotes overall health.
With one bowl of matcha it contains a considerable amount of potassium, vitamins A & C, iron, protein and calcium. Matcha decreases cholesterol levels in the blood and prevents diabetes and heart diseases. This is demonstrated as studies have shown that people who drink matcha regularly have lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol while presenting higher levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. Men specifically who drink matcha are 11% less likely to develop heart diseases compared to men who does not drink matcha. Additionally studies have shown that the nutrients in matcha may have the ability to prevent the attacks of HIV on human T-cells.
Matcha is full of benefits packed into an eco-friendly biodegradable bag, which is not only beneficial to us as individuals but to our environment. I personally use matcha to help with exercise and my overall health as it helps me focus, raise my energy levels and of course keep me healthy.
